GC offers summer youth camps


June 2, 2016 – (DENISON, TX) Grayson College will offer 17 camps for youth age 8 to 14 during June, July and the first week in August. Topics will vary but each four-day program features fun learning opportunities in a three-hour morning or afternoon session. Camps are offered by Grayson’s Center for Workplace Learning and will run Monday through Thursday.

            “Our goal is to provide an educational opportunity for all campers in a safe and enjoyable environment while they embark on a journey of fun and exciting learning experiences,” said Kate Corder, director of continuing education. “All students must demonstrate behavior consistent with this goal.”

            Registration is on a first come, first served basis and camp seating is limited. Tuition ranges from $100 to $120 and includes materials and camp activities. Payment is due at the time of enrollment and must be received before a place can be reserved in class. If the camp is canceled, the student automatically receives a 100% refund.

Blood and Bones: A Healthcare Experience*

Does the sight of blood make you queasy? NO? Join us! This camp will be held in Grayson College’s state of the art Health Science building.  Campers will be exposed to the successful careers in healthcare.  They will learn how to take blood pressure, vital signs, see the nursing simulation mannequins in action, examine and analyze body fluids, tissues and cells and look for bacteria, parasites and other microorganisms. Ages: 8-12, Jul. 11-14 from 9 a.m. until noon, $100

Cupcake Showdown

Think you’ve got what it takes to be the best cupcake chef in Texoma?  Learn tricks of the trade from Grayson’s own highly trained pastry chefs.  Students will mix, bake, design and finish fantastic cupcakes that will not only look professional but taste divine! The challenge is ON! Ages: 8-12, Jun. 27-30 from 1 -4 p.m., $120

Grayson Crime Scene Investigation

Join the team as a crime scene investigator! Learn to process a crime scene working hands-on to gather evidence. Work together as a crime scene unit to take photographs, search for evidence and start a case file. Learn the procedures for collecting fingerprints and analyzing blood spatter from a forensic expert. Ages: 8-12, Jun. 27-30 from 9 a.m. until noon, $100

Junior Chef Stars

Become a chef for the week as you prepare a new dish every day. Learn secrets of pasta and sauces, pizza dough and toppings. Create the world’s best sandwich. Put together a casserole. Bake a dessert to serve to family and friends. Talk about food and kitchen safety, food presentation and the best way to serve and eat.  Ages: 8-12, Jul. 18-21 from 1-4 p.m., $120

Junior Police Academy

Junior cadets will learn the basic functions of a police department and have the opportunity to practice what they learn in practical exercises. Junior trainees will participate in crime scene investigation, first aid, unarmed self-defense, internet safety, drug and gang awareness and firearm training simulator. Ages: 8-12, Jul. 25-28 from 9 a.m. until noon, $100

LEGO Video Games

Combine your two favorite activities: LEGOs and Video Games! Students will create their own LEGO universe, characters, and adventures in an interactive 2-D Video Game. Everyone is welcome in this one of a kind class. At the end of the program, every student will have a finished LEGO Video Game that can be shared with friends and family through a password protected Black Rocket website. Games are only compatible on PC computers; Mac versions can be created after the program for a $15.00 conversion fee. Students will work in pairs or teams for most of the program. Ages: 8-12, Jun. 27-30 from 9 a.m. until noon, $120

MAD Science

MAD Science gives kids the opportunity to learn about science through our interactive and hands-on activities. Our programs let children to become junior scientists for the week and embark on a series of science adventures!  Ages: 8-12, Jun. 20-23 from 9 a.m. until noon, $100

Make Your First Video Game!

If you love playing video games, this is the camp for you! Make your first video game in this one-of-a-kind class that shows you the keys to designing your first 2-D game. Conceptualization, play experience, challenge levels, graphics, sounds, and simple coding are just some of the concepts that we’ll explore. No prior experience necessary, just a desire to have fun. Student-created games will be available on a password protected Black Rocket website to share with friends and family. Games are only compatible on PC computers; Mac versions can be created after the program for $15.00 conversion fee.  Students will work in teams for most of the program. Ages: 8-12, Jul. 18-21 from 9 a.m. until noon, $120

Make Your First 3-D Video Game!

Try this new version of a Black Rocket classic! By popular demand, we redesigned our 3-D game design class from beginning to end. This new class allows you to develop a game concept that goes well beyond the limitations of the traditional 2-D game design classes.  Students will learn the physics behind 3D games, explore beginner event scripting, level design, controlling flow of gameplay, and story-telling. Student-created games will be available on a password protected Black Rocket website to share with friends and family. Students will work in teams for most of the program. Ages: 8-11, Aug. 1-4 from 9 a.m. until noon, $120 and Ages: 12 to 14, Aug.1-4 from 1-4 p.m., $120

Minecraft Animators

Bring your favorite Minecraft characters to life in an animated short film!  Learn how studios like Pixar and Disney make movies like Inside Out and Frozen by using techniques like keyframing, tweening, texturing, and animating rigged 3D models!  Student projects will be available on a Black Rocket website to share with friends and family.  You do not need to own a Minecraft account to use the software in this class. Students will work in pairs or teams for most of the program. Ages: 8-12, Jul. 25-28 from 9 a.m. until noon, $120

Minecraft Designers

If you love the game Minecraft, but always wanted to design your own characters and buildings for your games this class is for you! Learn the basics of creating 3-D models using a new software to design your very own objects, create skins for characters, and import them into your favorite Minecraft games. To access their project at home, students must own a PC/MAC version of Minecraft. Tablet, phone, and game console version of Minecraft are not compatible. Parent email address is required to use 3D modeling software. Students will work in teams for most of the program. Ages: 8-11, Jun. 20-23 from 9 a.m. until noon, $120

Minecraft Modders

Use your favorite game to learn the basics of modding and foundations of programming. Learn scripting and logic statements as you create your first mod! Introductory coding will also be taught through a simulated environment inspired by Minecraft. Student projects will be available on a Black Rocket website to share with friends and family. To access their project at home, students must own a PC/MAC version of Minecraft. Tablet, phone, and game console version of Minecraft are not compatible. Students will work in teams for most of the program. Ages: 8-11, Jul. 11-14 from 9 a.m. until noon, $120, and Ages: 12 to 14, Jul. 11-14 from 1-4 p.m., $120

Sparks, Nuts and Bolts- Manufacturing Camp*

Excitement will take over and their attention will focus on all the arcs and sparks, while their imaginations run wild with all of the possibilities of turning metal into something cool- through our virtual welding machines!  This camp will expose youth to some of the technical trades offered by Grayson College, as well as uncover some of the really cool manufacturing jobs available here in Texoma! This camp gives student the opportunity to have hands on experience with technology being used in the industry and explore the successful careers in manufacturing.  Ages: 8-12, Jun. 27-30 from 9 a.m. until noon, $100 and Jul. 25-28 from 9 a.m. until noon, $100

Survival School

Journey into the wild world of survival.  Campers will receive training in First Aid and CPR, emergency preparedness, and disaster survival.  This will be a hands-on, action-packed week that will cover many life threatening events.  Survival School is a fun, hands-on learning environment that gives children the knowledge, skills and confidence to assist others in a cardiac or first aid situation and react safely in emergency circumstances.
